First week in Mexico

I really thought I'd keep up with my blog better while we're down here.  Without internet in our house I'm not very good at taking the time it takes to upload pics, and write post.  It's also nice to live unplugged for a while.  Although I really hate to see our time here slipping by without having it documented for posterity sake.   I love looking back at past trips.

So here is a quick run down.

Last Sunday morning we crossed the U.S/ Mex. border and drove on the fancy new divided highway down through Ensenada.   After that the highway went back to single lane but much of it has been widened, making it quite a bit safer down through the mountains.  With a cliff on one side and the wall of a mountain on the other it's really nice to have a lane a bit wider than our van.

We arrived at our familiar little town a little past noon, drove down the same dusty street that I first rode down 12 years ago and arrived at the same little house we rented last year.

Every time something changes, every trip is different, but some things don’t change.   The sun is still shining, and the red dust still clings to our shoes.  Roosters are crowing and dogs are barking.  A mournful love song accompanied by a tuba comes from an unknown radio.  A car passes advertising something blasted from a loud speaker mounted to it’s roof.   In the air lingers the familiar, not unpleasant, scents that tells us we’re back in our other home.   My fruit bowl is now full if avocados, key limes, and tomatoes.  On my kitchen counter is a stack of fresh tortillas bought at the little store on the corner.    The kids suck on their chili and tamarind candies, and I hang laundry.   We smile at familiar faces and hug old friends.  It’s good to be here.  So much stays the same and yet so much has changed since we first started coming here.

We have a nice little fenced in yard which is great for keeping the roaming big nasty looking dogs away from playing kids.

We resumed our school work Monday morning...although we're not likely to look back on this month and say "wow, we sure accomplished a lot of book work".  Our goal is not to get too behind in our curriculum while we're gone...but we're here to experience and learn in other ways.

We made it out to see our kids Monday evening.   It was only the youngest 5 at home.   Minerva and their mom were still out working in the fields and Alvaro was somewhere roaming around.  Apparently he's gone quite a bit, which makes me wonder what he's up to.

It was so good to see them again.  It was also kind of sad, and a bit discouraging, and a big dose of reality.   They were all sick with nasty coughs, no longer in school, and fending for themselves all day. They did have food in their house though which was a good sign.  They now have two field workers in the family (Minerva works now) which is better for income...worse for education and a future.

Sweet Louisa wasn't feeling well at all.  We visited later in the week and she seemed quite a bit better, back to her smiley self.  What hadn't changed was the same filthy clothes with pants nearly up to her knees.   It's seriously so hard to find the balance between  wanting to "mother" them and not wanting to step on any toes or wound any pride.   We're planning on  picking them up Sunday although we aren't yet sure if we'll bring them back to our house or out for tacos and some playing at a park somewhere.  We'll see what the weather does.  It's been cool, windy, and a bit damp the last couple days.

Cece loved the baby.

"hola mijo'

The pics are kind of in a strange order.   This is the inside of our casa.   It's fully furnished and was nice and ready for us.   Our friends even stalked it with some toys for the kids.

I love these flowers.

Well,  I really need to go back home and put Cece down for a nap...I'm kind of tempted to take on myself.   Morning comes super early here it seems....thanks to the  two hour time change and roosters.    It seems I have also caught the cold "our" kids have and it  has sapped what energy reserves I had left. I'll try not to let another week go by without some updates and pics.

Baja Bound 2012 - San Diego

On driving day three we hit the road at our usual 7am and arrived in Arizona as the sun was coming up.  Those few miles through Arizona are probably our favorite scenery along the way.  Seemingly out of nowhere are miles of steep red canyons, mountains and cliffs...then instantly they are gone and it's back to desert.

From there we drove through Nevada.

Across the Mojave desert in California and then down south to San Diego.  We happened to hit Southern California traffic at about the worst time of the week...rush hour on a Friday.  Not. Fun.
The driver, and white knuckled co-pilot were about spent by the time we found a hotel well past dark.  We were SO ready to get out of the car and off of the freeway.  We found a nice little room at a Holiday Inn (which is way nicer and awesomely decorated than any other ones we've slept in) but it's only a very small 2 bed room.   Thanks to our stash of quilts and donated blankets in the back of our van (to take with us to Mexico) we had enough "beds" for everyone.   We decided that we all needed a travel break and we're spending a day in San Diego.

We took the kids to the San Diego Maritime museum this morning.  For $40 we we able to tour several real ships and submarines and explore museum exhibits.  It took about 2 hrs to walk through the whole thing and we could have taken much longer to actually look at everything if we didn't have a two year old who wanted to run off.   My full time job was keeping little children from falling to their watery deaths.  They all had a lot of fun, despite having a twitchy mom.

Roman was in heaven.  I`m pretty sure this adventure seeking explorer was born in the wrong century.    He`s kind of bummed that there aren`t anymore uncharted continents to discover.

Learning about the diet of sailors in the "mess hall".

The Russian Submarine made me claustrophobic....and it wasn't even surrounded by miles of ocean.

After our maritime excursion we enjoyed some fish and chips on a pier and then went back to the hotel.   The big kids and Daddy went out to play at Mission Bay playground and then swim at the hotel pool.   I had the hard job of chilling in a quite hotel room while Cece took a much needed nap.  That was followed by supper at our favorite fast food burger place "In and Out" burgers and a trip to by some last needed supplies and a few groceries to take with us to our Baja home.

Tomorrow morning we will be crossing the U.S /Mexican border and driving south.  Please pray for safety while we travel the winding mountain highway..and that we don't get lost in Tijuana again....and that we breeze through the military check points without needing to have our dug through (it's packed tight!).  Now that we're SO close to our destination I'm anxious to get there!  I'm so excited to see all our friends again, and to spend some time in the place that feels like our second home.

Baja Bound 2012 - Day 1 and 2

We set out on the road bright  dark and early Halloween morning.  The weather was decent winter driving until Southern Alberta where we hit some freezing rain.  By the time we hit the big interstate highway at the American border, all traces of snow and ice were gone and it was smooth sailing from there.
As much as I love Canada, the Americans know how to do major highways.  We are always relieved to get to the land of divided highways, drive up espresso stands, and clean “rest stops” scattered along the otherwise barren mountains of Montana.   Not to mention that once we cross the border it costs nearly half to fill our tank with gas, hotels cost half , and food along the way is cheap.

{Alberta rain/ice/ snow}

The kids settled into travel mode nicely, although Cece started demanding/ questioning “Go home?!” after about 6 hrs and Silas mistakenly thought I was an all day snack dispenser.  “Mom…mom…mom….can I have a snack?...do you have candy?  How about now? Can I have some now?  Mom…..mom…mom….mom….I’m hungwy….can I have gum?  Can I have some more gum? I swallowed it….can we buy some candy?...mom…mom…mom…I’m hungwy…”  x several hours.
I don’t know if it’s proper parenting to threaten to leave a child by the side of the road, but until you have lived through the relentless torture that is Silas’ one track mind focused on a mostly empty cooler (containing nothing more than some Goldfish crackers and almonds) BUT possibly filled with untold culinary delights…..don’t judge me.  I didn't actually do it and apparently it worked because he eventually quietly settled into travel mode too.  Fortunately by day two his obsession with the snack cooler burnt out.  We don’t hear a peep from the 2 seasoned travelers in the back row.  I loaded up two old ipods full of “Adventures in Odyssey” audio story episodes and they are content to listen to those and fiddle with whatever else they brought to entertain themselves.   Aili has been knitting up a storm.
After 11 hrs in the van we spent the night in Butte Montana at a Days Inn.  Somehow we managed to stuff / sneak our crew into a regular hotel room.   After dominating the pool Burlando style, and finding some supper at a nearby Quiznos we curled up comfortably into our 2 Queen beds, 1 cot, and 1 toddler bed (brought with us) and we all slept well until nearly 7am….a huge improvement from our 3am mornings last year!
Day 2 began with our hotel breakfast (the kids love those waffle machines and the juice dispenser).   I find Montana’s vast and rugged beauty breathtaking although for some reason I never seem to have my camera out as we drive through it.

{Evening #1 at our hotel in Montana}

The next morning (day 2) we left for another 10 hr day driving down through Idaho and Utah.  Day 2 always feels like a long haul through scenery that is a lot of the same.

In southern Idaho there is a rest stop in the middle of some interesting terrain made of volcanic rock.
It has a paved trail up through the cavernous rock.  It was a perfect little place to stretch our legs.

We made it to our destination of Cedar City Utah by supper time, found a family suite at Best Western, dined on some Wendy's salads. jumped on some hotel beds, and called it a day.

Tomorrow\s destination San Diego!
